Featuring, Dr. Hanna Gunn Assistant Professor, Philosophy Department, UC Merced The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Whatever your opinion on the question, "Can a computer think?", in 2025 some teens are spending more time with their artificially intelligent (Al) companions than with their human-peers. Some wedding planners are recommending soon-to-be-weds use Al to write their vows for them. Decisions about everything from parole, credit cards, mortgages, and insurance payments increasingly use Al. The Age of Artificial Intelligence is certainly here, but what exactly is Al? What are its benefits? What are its risks? Join me for a philosophical discussion of the technology. I begin with a brief history before digging into a tour of the ethical and philosophical problems that the tools raise for ourselves and our communities. The Local Grape is hiring! We are looking to expand the food service in our wine bar. We're looking for a talented individual that will develop our food options including rotating sandwiches, cheese boards and small plates to accompany our Sierra Foothill AVA wine selection of 50+ regional wines. We are seeking a friendly and customer-oriented person to join our team. Creativity and interests with cheese boards, sandwiches, and small plate (aka Tapas) is preferred. The ideal candidate will be responsible for greeting and assisting customers at the back counter, taking orders, preparing food, and maintaining a clean and organized dining area. Must be able to work well with others… because you will be working closely with all the guys and gals of Little Shop of Ramen and they really don’t put up with any shenanigans! While working close with the kitchen staff, you must be able to manage your time and work on your own!

We stocked up on our Holly's Hill Vineyards & Brewery selection on this last trip. Holly’s Hill specializes in Rhône varieties — Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and their blends — wines that thrive in our mountain climate just as they do in the south of France. From vibrant, fruit-forward reds to deep, cellar-worthy blends, each bottling is crafted to reflect their vineyard’s character and the personality of the vintage.

Patriarch: Patriarche is their flagship Rhône-style blend, inspired by the wines of France’s Rhone Valley and crafted from their mountain-grown Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache and Counoise. Tasting Notes: Lush layers of blueberry, blackberry, and blackcurrant aromas are joined by subtle notes of herbs de Provence, lavender, and a hint of anise. The palate offers rich cassis-like depth, finishing with smooth, ripe fruit that lingers pleasantly.

Mourvèdre Estate tasting notes: Dark, earthy, and complex, with deep fruit flavors and firm, structured tannins.

Another day, another Mariposa vineyard on its way

Another day, another Mariposa vineyard on its way back to a healthy, productive life! Five vineyards this week and can’t be more excited to see these vineyards coming back to life! Met with Karl Lund; UC Davis regional viticulture expert last week, discussing our little region and getting his expertise up here! Sara Elizabeth Rosenberg of UC Davis Cooperative Extention has been discussing cover crops and soil health for our region and will be helping assess some of these vineyards. And next…discussions for three new vineyard plantings are ongoing. It’s coming together and I love it!

I have not been keeping up with posts…just so damn busy running between vineyard work, the restaurant and the wine shop! Melissa and I stepped away for a quick exploratory Placer and Nevada County new winery trip and found some new ones that we knew nothing about! The Local Grape Happy Hour is now in session! 4-6 pm Tuesday through Friday all Sandwiches, Cheeseboards, Beer, Sake and your favorite regional wines from the Sierra Foothills AVA will be 10% off. So stop in tonight, relax, take a load off and enjoy a sip of your favorite drink…or do a wine tasting and discover your new favorite drink! (But don’t forget about the Japanese beers, they are pretty darn tasty)

Non-stop lesson learning! Lol…we decided to run s

Non-stop lesson learning! Lol…we decided to run sheep through the vineyard during off season this year for nutrient additions to the soil and cover crop management and it worked fantastic. The first picture is 3/4’s of the vineyard and sheep grazed! Picture two was the introduction of a new block with bud break about a month previously which was just too tempting for the sheep so that lasted about 15 minutes before we called it…sheep had to be moved before they ate the crop. Picture 3 is ungrazed block that had to be mechanically mowed. Sangiovese breaks about 3 weeks before the cab so next year…Sangiovese gets grazed first, Cabernet Sauvignon afterwards! But the nutrients added back into the soil is fantastic!
